10. General procedure: mono-Boc protected phenylenediamines were dissolved in MeOH and equimolar amounts of carboxylate, aldehyde and isonitrile added. The reaction mixture was stirred at rt overnight. After evaporation of the solvent, neat TFA was added and the reaction mixture again stirred at room temperature. Spontaneous cyclization to the Benzimidazole was usually observed after 4-12 h.
