This is illustrated in their own data in patients undergoing longer resections, and also in a review of other published RCTs in which the incidence of TUR syndrome with TURiS was 0%.

Eur Urol 2009 [Epub ahead of print]. This is the first meta-analysis of 16 RCTs for bipolar technology, suggesting equivalence to M-TURP with a favourable safety profile. However, difficulties with the analysable data include the heterogeneous study designs (including types of bipolar technology used) and relatively small numbers and short duration of followup in each included trial.

Eur Urol 2009; 55:922-929. This study offers data that bipolar TURP is as well tolerated and as effective as monopolar TURP, including after longer-term follow-up than most of the data included in Mamoulakis' meta-analysis. However, larger well designed studies are still needed to confirm this in other centres.

This article describes the numbers of training TURP cases experienced by graduating residents from the USA -it is worryingly less than one might expect, with a greater complication rate associated with fewer procedures performed.
