    • These attractive interchain interactions produce strong electronic coupling in both the ground and excited states. They have often erroneously been referred to as excimers in the literature. The term "excimer" refers to an attractive association that exists in the excited state with no interactions in the ground state.

    • In our original cyclophane system the oblique interchain associations and minor species are probably limited to two polymer chains. To create a threedimensional electronic structure we need extended oblique interactions. If these interactions produce centrosymmetric electronic states, there could still be cancellation of the material's overall transition dipole moment. However, if the system is made to be chiral then such a cancellation is not possible.
