    • The native oxide layer is on the order of 1-2 nm thick. For the amorphous Teflon thicknesses used the oxide layer will have a very small effect compared to the amorphous Teflon layer and will therefore be neglected.

    • Amorphous Teflon/F8 bilayers where also made by directly spincoating F8 onto oxygen-plasma treated amorphous Teflon films. However, for the purposes of the present study into the mechanism of dewetting, this would introduce further unknowns regarding the surface chemistry and long-range forces present in our system and complicate data interpretation.

    • Careful temperature versus time measurements show that sample surfaces took ∼2-3 s to reach a steady temperature after placing on the oven shelf. The images collected after 3 s heating have therefore not been heated at this steady temperature for the whole 3 s. Nonetheless they do show an important snapshot of the earliest stage of dewetting.

    • Although we do not have a direct measurement of the surface tension of F8 at elevated temperatures, the surface tension of a wide variety of polymer melts at 150 °C decreases to about 70%-80% of their value at 20 °C.[38] Anticipating similarbehaviorforF8 and noting the square root dependence on surface tension in Equation (3) we expect the F8 surface tension at 20 °C to give a reasonable prediction for the spinodal wavelength.

    • DSC traces show that bulk F8 has a broad melting peak at around 160 °C. However it is well known that polymer chain mobility in thin films, including F8, can differ significantly from the bulk. [42] We can anneal F8 at temperatures of 152 °C and above without the dewetting process stopping. For temperatures below this, dewetting proceeds to a certain extent before the morphology stops evolving due to crystallization of the polymer.
