unpublished results. In the case of tetrabutylammonium carboxylates in acetonitrile, it has been observed in our research group that the oxidation wave is enlarged and shifted toward more positive values when alkaline metal salts are added to the solution, which suggests that the negative charge on the carboxylic function is ion-pairing stabilized, and consequently this is less available for electron transfer. This ion-pairing phenomenon falls in line with the low solubility of the alkaline metal salts of carboxylic acids in polar solvents.
