4 at pH=3 with 0.1% Congo red indicator dye (initially blue) was brought into the environment of decanol containing ODA. The droplet exhibited an immediate change to red color in the droplet, indicative of a change in pH to above 5. Similar results were obtained with other indicators. This is likely due to the relatively small quantity of any acidic species in the aqueous microdroplet being overwhelmed by the amount of basic octadecylamine in the decanol chamber solution. Calculations based on a 100 μm diameter pure water droplet in a 200 μL chamber solution of decanol containing 3.7 mM ODA (0.1%) give many (∼4-8) orders of magnitude more ODA molecules in the chamber than there are protons available from a neutral aqueous solution. Therefore, we believe that accurate pH measurement or control in a microdroplet would be a difficult task in the presence of ODA.
