Although Copley estimated that 5 percent of properties were abandoned because of lead paint problems, that number is deceiving. As real estate values plummeted, abandoned property was becoming a huge problem in St. Louis. Lead paint problems were often just the last straw for property owners rather than the primary cause of abandonment.
