    • The CCDC database shows in Nov. 2008 a total of 5094 structures with the 2,2′-bpy molecule. Out of these, 4863 structures (ca. 95%) contain the 2,2′-bpy molecule acting as a bridging ligand (the remaining 5% contain the 2,2′-bpy molecule either isolated, without any metal, or with one or two protons on the N atoms). Of the 4863 structures where the 2,2′-bpy molecule acts as bridging ligand, 4825 (ca. 99%) contain metal atoms and only in 38 compounds the 2,2′-bpy molecule is bound to a semimetal or non metal atom (B, Si, P and As).

    • The lower coordinating ability of the 4,4′-bpy as compared with the 2,2′-bpy isomer is clearly seen in the number of known structures with both ligands. Thus, the CCDC database shows in Nov. 2008, 1635 structures containing the 4,4′-bpy molecule connecting transition metal atoms (vs. 5094 for the 2,2′ isomer).
