Associations between migrant status and sexually transmitted infections among female sex workers in Tijuana, Mexico
-
This study examined the association between migration and STI prevalence among FSWs in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. FSWs migrant to Baja California had lower prevalence of HIV and STIs than FSWs who were born in Baja California. Contrary to what was hypothesized, migrant status trended towards a protective effect for FSWs in this region. Findings suggest the need to retain healthy behaviors in migrant FSWs to prevent HIV and other STIs. Additional efforts are needed to identify protective mechanisms in migrant FSWs that can be incorporated into HIV/STI interventions for all FSWs

Predictors of sexual risk reduction among mexican female sex workers enrolled in a behavioral intervention study

this article, the authors examined the theoretical components of the Mujer Segura intervention that were associated with successful behavior changes among FSWs in Mexico. Improvements in self-efficacy were predictive of increased condom use with clients among FSWs who received the intervention. The authors also found that, although FSW-IDUs reported increased condom use, they benefited less from the intervention than noninjectors

Efficacy of a brief behavioral intervention to promote condom use among female sex workers in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
-
This study reports the efficacy of a brief behavioral intervention based on social cognitive theory and motivational interviewing techniques to promote condom use among FSWs in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The intervention was successful in reducing HIV and overall STI incidence and unprotected sex with male clients among FSWs. An advantange of this intervention is that it can be tailored to the cultural context of the setting and each woman's personal situation because the woman actively identifies barriers to safer sex in her own life and potential solutions as part of her goal setting with the intervention counselor. This brief intervention is an inexpensive approach to HIV and STI risk reduction that may serve as a model for interventions with FSWs in other resource-contrained settings

Correlates of hiv, stis and associated high risk behaviors among male clients of female sex workers in Tijuana, Mexico
-
To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine HIV and STI prevalence among US and Mexican clients of FSWs in Tijuana, Mexico, and document the relationship between HIV and methamphetamine use among clients of sex workers. The prevalence of HIV among clients was relatively high 4% and mirrored the HIV prevalence of FSWs in this city. Factors independently associated with HIV infection were using methamphetamine, living alone, and testing positive for syphilis. The findings suggest an urgent need to develop and test behavioral interventions that increase clients' knowledge of STI and HIV risks, while taking into account their prevalent use of drugs especially methamphetamine

Correlates of un-protected sex with female sex workers among male clients in Tijuana, Mexico
-
Epub ahead of print This study examined the correlates of unprotected sex with FSWs among male clients in Tijuana. Half 50.3% reported unprotected vaginal or anal sex with a FSW in Tijuana during the past 4 months. Factors independently associated with unprotected sex with FSWs were using drugs during sex, visiting the same FSW, being married, and being unemployed. The findings from this study suggest that FSWs' clients in Tijuana represent a 'bridge' group that may transmit STIs and HIV to less at-risk groups e.g. heterosexual women through unprotected sex with FSWs, wives, and other sex partners. HIV/STI prevention interventions promoting consistent condom use are greatly needed among clients of FSWs in this region and should address drug use and ongoing relations with particular FSWs

press. This study provides prevalence of IPV among FSWs with spouses or steady partners in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Correlates of IPV were having experienced abuse as a child, having a partner who had sex with someone else, and lower sexual relationship power. Results suggest that careful consideration of relationship dynamics such as infidelity and relationship power is warranted when assessing IPV risk. The findings demonstrate the importance of considering partner and individual-level factors when assessing for HIV risk among FSWs

Ulibarri MD, Strathdee SA, Lozada R, et al. Intimate partner violence among female sex workers in two Mexico-U. S. border cities: partner characteristics and HIV-risk behaviors as correlates of abuse. Psychol Trauma Theory Res Pract (in press). The findings demonstrate the importance of considering partner and individual-level factors when assessing for HIV risk among FSWs.

History of abuse and psychological distress symptoms among female sex workers in two Mexico-U. S. Border cities
-
First study to report the prevalence of psychological distress symptoms and history of emotional, physical and sexual abuse among FSWs in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. This study provides evidence of the widespread and enduring violence victimization that FSWs experience. Findings from this study underscore that history of abuse and violence victimization, especially sexual abuse, are serious problems among FSWs in the Mexico-US border region, and history of abuse may lead to higher levels of psychological distress

press. This study identified different pathways for entering sex work among FSWs in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez. Factors independently associated with early initiation < 18 years old were inhalant use, entering sex work to pay for alcohol, and history of child abuse. Factors independently associated with later initiation were less education, migration, and entering sex work for better pay or to support children
