    • Ecological reproductive isolation of coast and inland races of Mimulus guttatus
    • By performing a replicated reciprocal transplant experiment of coastal and inland ecotypes of Mimulus guttatus, the authors demonstrate several traits linked to local adaptation. They show that annual inland forms performed better in seasonally dry inland habitats while salt tolerant perennial forms performed best in the moist, salt-sprayed coastal habitats. Micro-satellite variation suggests coastal and inland forms are strongly diverged, with coastal forms derived from inland forms.

    • The genetic architecture of maize flowering time
    • Using the new maize (Zea mays) 'Nested Association Mapping' population, the authors find many QTLs for flowering time that are additive and have small effects. The NAM consists of 5000 inbred lines of maize from 25 different crosses with 200 RILs per cross. This design is necessary in maize because LD is too short and the genome is too large for a typical GWA study. NAM has been carried out previously in mouse, but this is the first large-scale effort in a plant system.

    • The authors identified two genes, SNORKEL1 and SNORKEL2, underlying rice deepwater response QTLs through positional cloning and subsequent transgenic experiments. These genes are ethylene-response genes that are activated when ethylene accumulates underwater and cause internode elongation via GA. They went on to test introgression lines containing all combinations of the three QTL regions and found that the NIL containing all three regions recapitulated the deepwater variety response. This type of breeding could produce highly desirable cultivars.

    • Genomic analysis of differentiation between soil types reveals candidate genes for local adaptation in Arabidopsis lyrata
    • By hybridizing genomic DNA of A. lyrata to the Affymetrix Arabidopsis tiling array, and masking it to probes that are conserved between A. thaliana and A. lyrata, single feature polymorphisms were assayed between populations from different soil types. Of the hundreds of genes differing between soil types, several gene classes were over-represented. One of these gene classes - cation homeostasis genes - is predicted to play an important role in soil adaptation.
