    • Precision and diversity in an odor map on the olfactory bulb
    • An elegant imaging study describing glomerular activation maps in the OB in response to a large panel of odors. The authors demonstrate that response profiles to odor-spectra alone can be used to identify individual glomeruli across animals and across species (i.e. rats and mice). The authors show that the relative positions of identified glomeruli is reproducible with high fidelity suggesting the ORN anatomical map develops with remarkable accuracy.

    • Pre-target axon sorting establishes the neural map topography
    • One of the series of experiments from the same lab using powerful genetic manipulations of ORNs and/or mice to discover the molecular mechanisms of ORN wiring specificity in the OB. The authors demonstrate that OR-mediated cAMP signaling levels regulate the expression of Semaphorin-3A and its receptor Neuropilin-1 and provide a detailed mechanism for axonal sorting before axons reach the OB. The authors propose mechanisms of how ORNs converge into glomeruli after arriving to the target.

    • Mice with a "monoclonal nose": perturbations in an olfactory map impair odor discrimination
    • Using a powerful genetic manipulation, nearly all the inputs to the OB were engineered to express a single OR, M71. Together with reference [26] this is one of the first reproducible global manipulation of the organization of the 'map'. This study used several techniques (from physiology, through imaging to behavior) to characterize how these transgenic mice code and perceive odors. Their results have implications on how odors are encoded in the olfactory system emphasizing how structured patterns of input are computed beyond the level of the OB.

    • Sensory input enhances synaptogenesis of adult-born neurons
    • This study (together with references [51] and [64]) is one of the first examples of in vivo time lapse imaging of OB neurons. The authors used high resolution in vivo two-photon microscopy of putative synapses of adult born PGNs in an activity-dependent context. By comparing synaptogenesis of neurons within and out of the odor activation loci, the study shows that dendritic development and synaptogenesis are regulated by sensory activity.

    • Adult neurogenesis promotes synaptic plasticity in the olfactory bulb
    • Using classical slice electrophysiology in the OB the authors targeted virally labeled adult-born granule cells. They discover the existence of long term potentiation (LTP) onto synapses of newborn INs. LTP was synapse specific and faded in neurons as they matured. These data further support and strengthen the evidence for the role of INs (and specifically the newborn INs) in OB plasticity.
