    • Allow the researcher to get in touch with participants' perceptions, attitudes, and opinions in a way that other procedures do not allow
    • Note, focus groups
    • Focus groups have been little used so far in the study of post-communist politics, although they have a number of obvious advantages in societies in which there is still a strong cultural bias towards reporting opinions that are thought to be favoured by those who are asking the questions, or in general the state authorities. As Richard A. Krueger has noted, focus groups 'allow the researcher to get in touch with participants' perceptions, attitudes, and opinions in a way that other procedures do not allow': Focus Groups: A Practical Guide for Applied Research, 2nd edn (Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage, 1994), p.238.
