    • The historical narratives of the local actors are not heroic poems but they are a narration celebrating heroic feats and legendary heroes. Real or fictitious events are narrated in a kind of elevated style, talking about impressive actions and surpassing the ordinary. The actor's narration refers to a series of events suggesting of a literary epic. It talks about a complex tradition mixing scientific, social and political representations. The repetition of this historical narration creates a web of representation for the actors who seem to share some emotion listening or counting this narrative

    • Such historical narrative is also a selection of events chosen by the actors. It overlooks other facts and alternative historical narratives. Sometimes, a different story is told by marginalised actors (e.g., a small poster in an exhibition tracing the history of the paper industry and underlining that Grenoble is not just about nanotechnologies or a researcher in medical science who refuses to reduce the city's history to hydroelectricity and electronics alone or a group of opponents telling the tale of century-long form of connivance between industry, research, defence and elected officials)

    • Public participation and the environment. Do we know what works?
    • Although it is not the topic of this paper, the question of public trust is important for NST, including when it appears to be relatively high and related to enthusiasm and pride, as in the present case. The opponents can be seen to have little impact on lay people. Public trust, therefore, is not that important in terms of science policy. However, when it comes to developing new products and markets, public trust plays a bigger role. For a theoretical discussion of public trust, see
