Asymmetric microtubule pushing forces in nuclear centering
-
By displacing the nucleus of fission yeast cells using cell centrifugation, the authors show that microtubules that are in contact with the closer cell pole have a longer dwell time (i.e. the period that a microtubule contacts a cell pole before shrinking) than those in contact with the farther cell pole.

A mechanism for nuclear positioning in fission yeast based on microtubule pushing
-
When microtubules grow to the poles of a fission yeast cell, they exert transient forces produced by plus-end polymerization that push the nucleus. The authors suggest that a balance of these pushing forces can provide a mechanism to position the nucleus at the middle of the cell.

Self-organization of dynein motors generates meiotic nuclear oscillations
-
This combined experimental and theoretical study suggests a mechanism of nuclear oscillations based on a mechanical regulation of dynein distribution. Dynein redistributes in response to load forces, resulting in more dynein attached to the leading than to the trailing microtubules. The redistribution of dyneins introduces an asymmetry of the forces pulling in opposite directions, leading to the generation of oscillations.

Force- and kinesin-8-dependent effects in the spatial regulation of fission yeast microtubule dynamics
-
By using automated image analysis, the authors study fission yeast microtubule dynamics. The resulting data, which are of unprecedented quality and quantity, lead to the conclusion that microtubule catastrophe frequency in interphase cells increases with microtubule length. This is mediated by kinesin-8 proteins (Klp5/6).

Elastic and damping forces generated by confined arrays of dynamic microtubules
-
This theoretical study shows that for an array of microtubules growing out from a nucleation site and confined by the periphery of the cell, pushing forces center the array if the microtubules are dynamic after reaching the periphery. For small displacements and velocities, the array can be modeled simply as a damped spring.

Chromosome congression by kinesin-5 motor-mediated disassembly of longer kinetochore microtubules
-
This experimental and theoretical analysis of the budding yeast mitotic spindle suggests that kinesin-5 motors bind to kinetochore microtubules, move to their plus-ends, and promote plus-end disassembly of longer microtubules. The length-dependent control of net kinetochore microtubule assembly by kinesin-5 motors facilitates chromosome congression to the metaphase plate.

Dynamic behavior of microtubules during dynein-dependent nuclear migrations of meiotic prophase in fission yeast
-
This paper provides careful measurements of microtubule dynamics during nuclear oscillations. One of the key results is that dynein slows down the depolymerization rate of the microtubules that pull on the nucleus.

Theory of mitotic spindle oscillations
-
In a theoretical description of mitotic spindle oscillations, cooperative attachment and detachment of cortical force generators to astral microtubules lead to spindle oscillations above a critical number of force generators. An important part of the model is the detachment rate of force generators, which depends on the load forces experienced by the force generators.
