    • The authors propose a theoretical model of active force fluctuations because of motor activity in gels. They predict a general form of the spectrum of these fluctuations, which decreases strongly with frequency, indicating that the active fluctuations dominate at long times, while thermal effects tend to dominate as short times.

    • An active biopolymer network controlled by molecular motors
    • Koenderink et al. construct a reconstituted myosin-activated actin network, using the physiological crosslinker filamin. They demonstrate a 100-fold active stiffening of networks at a macroscopic level. Furthermore, they show a direct analogy of the motor stiffening with macroscopic stress stiffening. Related macroscopic contractile activity was also shown by these authors in [40].

    • High-resolution probing of cellular force transmission
    • This report presents a highly sensitive method to measure the active force fluctuations generated by cells suspended between two optically trapped beads. Interestingly, the forces transmitted to the environment depend strongly on the rigidity of the outside environment.
