From the experimental arrangement for SRPES measurements, the steep slope of the I-V characteristic anodic from ocp and its dependence on surface states with densities far below those detectable in surface analysis measurements and the technique of jet-blowing the electrolyte droplet off the surface, results in a small difference in the experiments between AFM and SRPES. We have found, however (see remarks under 15) that the charge passed and the potential are both determining the surface topography; here, the almost identical charge and the very similar potential establish conditions which are as close as possible under the present experimentation

We are aware of the existence of other models such as those of Koij and Vanmaekelbergh and of Riley; they will be compared with the AKG model in a forthcoming article. Phys. Rev. B, submitted

In an investigation of more advanced roughening, it has been found that remnants of terraces transform into large flat mesa-type structures with a top (1 1 1) oriented surface which are metastable because their boundary planes are made of low index (1 × 1)-H terminated faces H.J.
