For cellular uptake measurements at least 70% confluent cell layers were exposed to 10 μM of the agents for 6 h. Afterwards cells were isolated, lysed and the obtained lysates were investigated for their ruthenium content by atomic absorption spectroscopy and for their protein content by the Bradford method. Accordingly, the amount of complex taken up into the cells was expressed as ng ruthenium per mg cellular protein. Further details on this assay can be found in Refs. 19,20.
