This article examines country-based means of suicide using data from the WHO mortality database. This seminal study is a systematic review of the evidence on suicide-prevention interventions in the following key domains, awareness and education, screening, treatment, means restriction, and media. Although authors conclude that there is a need for increased evaluation within each domain, primary care physician education and lethal means restriction were cited as effective prevention strategies.

The most influential variable positively related to firearm assessment and counseling behaviors among these social workers was previous firearm safety training.

The study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the US Air Force's Managing Suicidal Behavior (MSB) educational intervention in changing provider confidence and beliefs about treating suicidal patients. Almost all participants of the MSB reported some intent to change, and a large percentage reported having implemented an individual behavior change or a change in their clinical practice policies in response to the MSB training.

This study provides helpful guidance about how to manage a situation in which a person who is at high-risk for suicide has access to a firearm. Gun safety management is a critical task; how it is carried out will depend on the patient, setting, and circumstances. The author recommends that clinicians work collaboratively with the patient and with friends or family members to ensure that access to firearms is limited.
