    • In situ AFM experiments were performed with a MFP3D-SA (Asylum research, Santa Barbara) equipped with a fluid cell. CaCl2 (aq) and NaHCO 3 (aq) solutions were prepared by dissolving CaCl2 (Aldrich) and NaHCO3 (Oriental Chemical, Seoul, Korea) into deionized water (AquaMax Basic 361, Young Lin Instrument, Anyang, Korea, Each solution was separately supplied to a Yconnector, which was connected to the inlet of the fluid cell via a Teflon tubing, to be mixed just before streaming into the fluid cell. The concentration of each solution was 5.0 mM, and the concentration after mixing was 2.5 mM (pH 8.1-8.3) because equal amount solutions were transported to the fluid cell. Also, the flow rate for each solution was 1.5 mL/min, and the total flow after mixing became 3.0 mL/min. When a polymer additive was present in the growth solution, a small amount of a polymer stock solution (ca. 1, in DI water) was added to the NaHCO3 (aq) part to m
