    • The reader should note that two caveats apply to this study. First, the peptide concentrations utilized in the present study (1-10 μM) are probably not indicative of the true quantities of the parent proteins that reside within the nacre layers of each mollusk. Second, our in vitro system utilizes geologic calcite fragments which feature the {104} plane and thus does not feature the appropriate biogenic mineral surfaces found within the nacre layer. For this reason, our current studies should be viewed as being comparative within a laboratory setting but not representative of the true biological situation within the mollusk shell.
