    • The synthesis of PBI 2 was carried out following a well-stablished procedure for N-substituted PBIs [14]. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3, 25 °C, TMS) δ 8.15 (s, 4H, H-2,5,8,11), 7.27 (d, J = 8.7 Hz, 8H, Ph-H-3), 6.85 (d, J = 8.7 Hz, 8H, Ph-H-2), 4.03 (m, 4H, -CH2-N), 1.85 (m, 2H, -CH-), 1.73 (s, 8H, -CH2-), 1.37 (s, 24H, -CH3), 1.35-1.20 (m, 16H, -CH2-), 0.87 (t, J = 6.5 Hz, 6H, -CH3), 0.85 (t, J = 6.5 Hz, 6H, -CH3), 0.78 (s, 36H, -tert-butyl). IR (KBr) ν: 2953, 2872, 1701 (C=O imide), 1664 (C=O imide), 1590, 1502, 1435, 1353, 1303, 1285, 1217, 1175 cm-1. UV-vis (CH2Cl2) λmax (log ε): 265 (4.20), 291 (4.42), 450 (4.24), 543 (4.46), 579 nm (4.66).
