A novel Staphylococcus aureus vaccine: iron surface determinant B induces rapid antibody responses in rhesus macaques and specific increased survival in a murine S. aureus sepsis model
-
The surface protein IsdB was found on the surface of multiple S. aureus strains and vaccination with IsdB led to a specific protective response in animal models. IsdB also induces an immune response in macaques further demonstrating its potential as a vaccine component.

Vaccine assembly from surface proteins of Staphylococcus aureus
-
The authors tested a range of surface proteins as antigens and found a vaccine comprising IsdA, IsdB, SdrD and SdrE led to significant protection in invasive and lethal challenge models of infection. This highlights the requirement for a likely multivalent vaccine for protection against S. aureus.

Human immunoglobulin G recognizing fibrinogen-binding surface proteins is protective against both Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis infections in vivo
-
Purified IgG from human donors with an elevated titre against ClfA (from S. aureus) and SdrG (from S. epidermidis) is able to protect against infection from both bacterial species in animal models. This led to the human clinical trials for Veronate in low birth weight neonates, which were unfortunately unsuccessful.

Identification of in vivo-expressed antigens of Staphylococcus aureus and their use in vaccinations for protection against nasal carriage
-
Using human sera to probe expression libraries, a range of S. aureus antigens associated with human infection and nasal carriage were identified. IsdA was found to be required for nasal colonization in a cotton rat model and that vaccination with IsdA could prevent carriage, thus showing its potential as a human vaccine component.
