A shortcut to identifying small molecule signals that regulate behavior and development in Caenorhabditis elegans
-
This study expands the number of known ascarosides in C. elegans with a new NMR technique that compares mutant and wild-type animals. By comparing daf-22 animals which lack functional ascarosides with N2 animals, they discovered four new ascarosides and showed that they are active in mating and dauer.

A hub-and-spoke circuit drives pheromone attraction and social behaviour in C. elegans
-
This paper shows that ascarosides also are involved in aggregation. Solitary feeding wild-type (N2) hermaphrodites are repelled by ascarosides but isolates that exhibit aggregation behavior are attracted.

Sexual partners for the stressed: facultative outcrossing in the self-fertilizing Nematode C. elegans
-
Dauer conditions increase the number of males through increased male mating behavior. This is strain-specific and does not happen with N2 animals. Although there is no chemical associated with this observation, it suggests an important mechanism to link mating and dauer behaviors.
