Determinants of discard of expanded criteria donor kidneys: Impact of biopsy and machine perfusion

see comment. Sung et al. reviewed data from Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR)/organ Procurement and Transplantation Network OPTN using logistic regression. Fewer ECD kidneys were discarded when pumped (29.7 vs. 43/6%). Those ECD kidneys pumped were also less likely to have DGF but not graft failure

Machine perfusion of cold storage in deceased donor kidney transplantation
-
A recent article this year published by Moers et al. prospectively randomized donor kidneys such that one was stored with pulsatile perfusion and one via traditional cold storage. Although the study had relatively short ischemic times, it was sufficiently powered with over 300 paired kidneys studied. They showed a statistically significant decrease in DGF and an improvement in outcomes at 1 year
