    • Time-resolved IR images taken immediately after shock breakout in another experiment (Ref.) show structures, some of which may be associated with the grains. An estimated distribution of temperatures within a multimillimeter region of interest obtained by converting the radiance images to temperature using a single emissivity indicates a typical standard deviation of ±10 K. In this experiment most of this variation is averaged out by the larger sampling spot.

    • STL Internal Report,; emissivity values for several of the samples were determined using three methods, an integrating sphere, IR camera, and ellipsometer. Values ranged from 0.10 to 0.15, depending on the wavelength and sample. We chose 0.10 as a conservative number but still consistent with these measurements. Choosing a larger value of the static emissivity would reduce the upper error bar on a temperature measurement, and vice versa. Since the choice of 1.0 for the maximum possible emissivity determines the lower true-temperature error bar, that error bar cannot be lowered further (for example, to improve agreement with the calculated curve above 25 GPa) without violating the assumption that the emissivity cannot be larger than 1.
