HPLC-grade methanol was obtained from J. T. Baker and used without further purification (water content ?0.1%). No attempt was made to keep the methanol anhydrous. Hydrated metal nitrate salts were also used, so all of the water available for incorporation as hydroxide bridges came from these salts, water in the solvent, and other adventitious water.
