Visfatin: a protein secreted by visceral fat that mimics the effects of insulin
-
This study was the first to identify visfatin as a novel adipocytokine capable of mimicking the glucose-lowering effect of insulin. However, the data suggesting that it acted at the level of the insulin receptor were questioned resulting in a later retraction of this study (see reference [5]).

Adiponectin protects against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury through AMPK- and COX-2-dependent mechanisms

This important experimental study was among the first to link an adipocytokine, in this case, adiponectin, with cardioprotection. Crucially, this protective effect was dependent on a receptor-mediated activation of intracellular signalling pathways indicating that a direct cardioprotective effect at the level of the cardiomyocyte.
