    • Strictly speaking, rotaxanes are topologically trivial species. Nevertheless, if the stoppers are bulky enough, unthreading is physically impossible. The thread can thus be assimilated to an infinitely long line, which makes the rotaxane a topologically nontrivial species under these conditions. Although this definition is not rigorous, it is convenient and allows us to consider that the topological properties of catenanes and rotaxanes are similar
