The MALDI-TOF spectrum of β-cyclodextrin 2 showed only one peak at the molecular mass plus 32, i.e. including a sulfur atom, a known phenomenon for sulfur compounds (M. Hesse, H. Meier, B. Zeeh, Spektroskopische Methoden in der Organischen Chemie, Thieme, Stuttgart, 1991). β-Cyclodextrin 5 showed 5 equidistant peaks which were attributed to the subsequent loss of methylsulfide (MeS) groups.
