A computer search of the Cochrane Library identified 11 reviews related to IUDs; 10 completed, and one in progress. This is an excellent review of IUDs with topics including types of IUDs, timing of insertion, clinical management, emergency contraception and use as gynecological treatment.

This opinion by the Committee on Adolescent Healthcare from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists supports the use of IUDs by adolescents based on data supporting the safety of IUDs. This document addresses the major benefits of IUD use in adolescents.

In this survey of 144 young women aged 14-24 years, only 40% had heard of the IUD. Having heard of the IUD was associated with older age, higher level of maternal education and a history of voluntary sexual intercourse. Of those who had heard of the IUD, 37.5% had a positive attitude toward the IUD before being educated about IUDs. After a 3-min educational intervention, 53.5% of all participants had a positive attitude toward the IUD. This positive attitude was associated only with a history of voluntary sexual intercourse. Although many young women are unaware of IUDs, they are likely to view IUDs positively after being educated about them. Demographic and reproductive health history did not predict attitude, thus all young women should be offered education about IUDs.

This review describes the safety, side effects and noncontraceptive benefits of injectable, implantable and intrauterine contraception to help clinicians guide adolescents in choosing appropriate contraception. The review includes a discussion of the use of the progestin-releasing IUD (Mirena) including its non-contraceptive benefits and is a useful overview of long-acting contraception for adolescents.
