This study provides much-needed data on cardiovascular morbidity in this patient population.

The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome is increased in patients with GH deficiency, irrespective of long-term substitution with recombinant human GH. Eur J Endocrinol 2007; 156:455-462. An important negative study showing that overall GHRT does not have an effect on components of the metabolic syndrome.

This study shows a positive correlation between IGF-1 and lipids, and a negative correlation with obesity. Sex difference is observed with IGF-1 significantly lower in women with the metabolic syndrome.

The longest prospective study looking at outcome measures with GHRT. It shows a sustained improvement in body composition and lipid profile, with more marked body composition changes in men.

This study on congenital GH-deficient patients showed an increase in the number of atherosclerotic plaques in patients receiving GHRT, suggesting a word of caution on the universally accepted beneficial effects of GHRT on atherosclerosis.
