Alternatively, the formation of tricyclic derivative 4 through the nucleophilic attack of the hydroxy group on the carbonyl to form a hemiacetal species, which is further methylated by the original diazomethane, cannot be ruled out. This is in agreement with Patterson and Reusch's report on the transformation of a hemiacetal to a ketal bicyclic system in excess diazomethane: J. W. Patterson Jr, W.
