    • (a) Though the free volume of the azobenzene units originate mainly from the asymmetric disulfide, surface roughness also contribute to the packing disorder, and hence also increase the free volume of the azobenzene moieties. For example, this reference showed that gold nanoparticles capped by similar unsymmetrical azobenzene disulfides resulted in ideal photoreactions devoid of steric effects owing to the contribution of the curved colloidal gold surface; (b) A.
