The temperature is measured by a sensor mounted on the copper cold finger several millimeters from the sample. Local heating due to the imprinting beam is almost certainly present.

We have not observed nuclear-spin diffusion either when polarizing (imprinting beam on) or depolarizing (imprinting beam off), presumably due to the fact that in our samples nuclear-spin relaxation is dominated by depolarization via spin-flip processes with the relatively abundant itinerant electrons.
