Peripheral infusion of rat bone marrow derived endothelial progenitor cells leads to homing in acute lung injury
-
The authors here used bone marrow derived EPCs to test for homing in a rat transplant model of ALI. By peripherally injecting the EPCs, they were able to demonstrate integration into the lung with ALI, suggesting that transplanted EPCs may be important in establishing vascular integrity

Xu J, Woods CR, Mora AL, et al. Prevention of endotoxin-induced systemic response by bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in mice. Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol 2007; 293:L131-L141. This study shows how BMDMSCs prevented the systemic inflammatory response and ALI seen in a murine model of endotoxemia without engrafting in the lung. These observations demonstrated that stem cells may be immunomodulatory, and hence a potential therapeutic option in sepsis.
