This study is in agreement with the current concept that apoptosis is dangerous in advanced atherosclerosis (e.g. references [9,10,14]).

Cheng J, Zhang J, Merched A, et al. Mechanical stretch inhibits oxidized low density lipoprotein-induced apoptosis in vascular smooth muscle cells by upregulating integrin {alpha}Vbeta3 and stablization of PINCH-1. J Biol Chem 2007; 282:34268-34275. Authors provided evidence that mechanical stretch acts as a prosurvival factor for VSMC by upregulation of integrin (αVβ3) and stabilization of PINCH-1, which counteracts ox-LDL.
