    • In addition to trap-loss measurements, we verified that the production rate of ions from photoassociative ionization in the pure Na trap agreed with previous experiments [see P. Gould et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 60, 788 (1988)]. However, we did not detect any excess in this rate when either Rb isotope trap was allowed to overlap the Na trap.

    • -1. The fact that all of these loss rates are of comparable magnitude means that no single trap-loss process can easily mask the effect of one of the others. The asymmetry in loss between the Na and Rb traps is therefore attributed to the energy redistribution difference between Na and Rb due to the large mass difference.
