•• Letendre S, Paulino AD, Rockenstein E, et al.: HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center Group: Pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus coinfection in the brains of patients infected with HIV. J Infect Dis 2007, 196:361-370. In this recent publication from the University of California, San Diego HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center Group, we identified that HCV RNA and HCV-encoded proteins were present in brain tissue from HIV-HCV-coinfected individuals. We also demonstrated that astrocytes and macrophages were immunoreactive for HCV core and NS5a, supporting that these cells were infected by HCV and produced these HCV-encoded proteins.
