In this manuscript, they identified evidence of adaptation of HCV to the central nervous system by sequencing DNA in the internal ribosomal entry site and hypervariable region 1 from two individuals dying with HCV infection and demonstrating differences from HCV derived from other tissues.

In this recent publication from the University of California, San Diego HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center Group, we identified that HCV RNA and HCV-encoded proteins were present in brain tissue from HIV-HCV-coinfected individuals. We also demonstrated that astrocytes and macrophages were immunoreactive for HCV core and NS5a, supporting that these cells were infected by HCV and produced these HCV-encoded proteins.
