Similar to what has been implemented in our time-independent MCBSCF approach for arbitrary trap geometries and inclusion of one- and many-body symmetry breaking effects, it is possible to add Lagrange multipliers in a time-dependent formulation to explicitly enforce spatial orthogonality of orbitals throughout the dynamics; see, e.g., Ref.. However, for BECs trapped in symmetric double wells, using orbitals that are spatially symmetric and antisymmetric with respect to the trapping potential ensures their spatial orthogonality in time without adding constraints.

For notational simplicity, the explicit time dependence of the dynamical variables may be omitted when it is reasonable to do so.

A similar situation exists in the dissociation of, e.g., a diatomic molecule, where (unrestricted) HF mean-field theory often provides reasonable description both at equilibrium and at dissociation. However, for intermediate bond lengths, HF theory fails and a multiconfigurational theory like configuration interaction is necessary.
