Structural analogs of ABA reveal novel features of ABA perception and signaling in Arabidopsis

This study shows that different ABA analogs induce differing patterns of gene expression consistent with the action of multiple ABA receptors. Also shows that exogenously applied ABA is rapidly degraded and that application of a more stable ABA analog allowed additional ABA-induced gene expression changes to be observed.

This study shows that knockout mutants of the G protein α subunit, the G protein β subunit, and G protein coupled receptor1 (GCR1) all are ABA hypersensitive in seed germination and have root growth phenotypes related to ABA. Raises the possibility that GCR1 may have a contrasting role in ABA signaling compared with GCR2.

Use of the glucosyltransferase UGT71B6 to disturb abscisic acid homeostasis in Arabidopsis thaliana
-
This study shows that overexpression of an ABA-glucosyltransferase increased levels of ABA-glucose ester but had little effect on free ABA levels in either unstressed or wilted plants. Also reports that NCED3 overexpression led to no change in ABA content. Both results demonstrate the difficulty in disrupting ABA homeostasis and the importance of feedback regulation in controlling ABA metabolism.

Activation of glucosidase via stress-induced polymerization rapidly increases active pools of abscisic acid
-
This study identifies an ABA-glucosidase capable of releasing free ABA from the biologically inactive ABA-glucose ester in a stress-dependent manner. Demonstrates that ABA-glucose ester is subject to more rapid turnover than previously thought and that this turnover is important in development and stress response.
