The nudged elastic band (NEB) method [JCPSA6 0021-9606 10.1063/1.1329672
-
The nudged elastic band (NEB) method [G. Henkelman, B. P. Uberuaga, and H. Jonsson, J. Chem. Phys. JCPSA6 0021-9606 10.1063/1.1329672 113, 9901 (2000)] has been widely used in evaluating the energy barrier along the reaction pathway. The NEB method needs to calculate the forces at all points on the chain (along the reaction pathway) concurrently, move all the points according to the forces, and repeat the calculation until all the forces vanish. Thus, the NEB method cannot figure out the existence of two states between DI-1 and DI-2, but obtains a continuous energy profile along the reaction pathway. On the other hand, the gradient projection method used here obtains the lowest energy pathway by reducing the forces with a constraint which is varied along the reaction pathway, thereby finding the two states between DI-1 and DI-2. In the case of ethylene adsorption on Si(001) where such a nonadiabatic process does not exist, we employed the gradient projection method to obtain a continuous energy profile from the precursor state to the 2+2 addition product with an energy barrier of 0.02 eV
