    • β where the β-relaxation occurs at 1 Hz. While the present aging temperature for xylitol fulfills this condition, in glycerol and PC this may not be the case (see [6] for information on the β-relaxation in these materials). However, Struick mainly treated polymers and his arguments are based on the interpretation of the β-relaxation as motions of side-groups or parts of chain segments. Thus most likely they cannot be generalized to non-polymeric glass formers, where the β-relaxation mostly is believed to be of intermolecular origin.

    • For comparing relaxation times from different evaluations, it is helpful to plot the average relaxation times instead of the fit parameters τ. For the CD-function, the average relaxation time is given by 〈τ〉 = τβ. For the HN function 〈τ〉 is not defined. As the HN function in the present case of xylitol is rather close to a CD function (small parameter α), 〈τ〉 ≈ τβ was used.
