Constituents of SH1, a novel, lipid-containing virus infecting the halophilic euryarchaeon Haloarcula hispanica
-
The authors present the genome sequence of the only spherical halovirus identified to date, Har. hispancia virus SH1. Like other archaeal viruses, the SH1 genome shows little similarity to other published sequences. The authors also show that the SH1 virion contains lipid components and identify the genes for 11 of the virus structural proteins. Overall, the structures of the virion and genome are reminiscent of other viruses, such as the eucaryotic adenovirus and bacteriophage PRD1.

His1 and His2 are distantly related, spindle-shaped haloviruses belonging to the novel virus group, Salterprovirus
-
The authors describe the characterisation of two spindle-shaped haloviruses, Har. hispanica viruses His1 and His2. Additionally, they present the complete genome sequences of the two viruses and identify the gene encoding the major capsid protein of His2. The viruses both encode putative DNA polymerases, similar to those that replicate via protein priming, implying that this mechanism of genome replication may exist in all three Domains of Life.

Ecophysiology of bacteriophage S5100 infecting Halobacterium cutirubrum

The effect of salinity changes on the infectivity of head-tail halovirus S5100, which infects Hbt. salinarum, is explored. On the basis of these characteristics, the authors explore the possible explanations for the changes in virus behaviour during drought or rainfall scenarios.

Highly virulent head-tail haloviruses and head-tail haloviruses of low virulence are obtained from a natural hypersaline pond. The behaviour of these viruses when infecting Hbt. salinarum are compared and the authors speculate on the selection for slowly adsorbing, less aggressive viruses in natural environments.

Virus lysis and bacterivory as prokaryotic loss factors along a salinity gradient
-
The authors study mortality of prokaryotes in solar salterns due to viruses and bacterivory, over a range of salinities. Although the viruses in these systems did not appear to regulate the prokaryotic population to a great extent, it was stated that many of the square haloarchaea were seen to be infected by spindle-shaped virus-like particles.

Halobacterium halobium strains lysogenic for phage ΦH contain a protein resembling coliphage repressors
-
The authors use genetic data and transcription mapping to identify the region to which a halophilic repressor may bind head-tail virus ΦH DNA during infection of Hbt. salinarum. The gene encoding the DNA-binding protein is identified and its activity is shown in vitro. The repressor only prevents transcription in the lysogenic phase and appears to block RNA polymerase from initiating transcription.

Natrialba magadii virus ΦCh1: first complete nucleotide sequence and functional organization of a virus infecting a haloalkaliphilic archaeon
-
The complete genome sequence of Nab. magadii head-tail halovirus ΦCh1 is presented. ΦCh1 is distinct from other studied haloviruses in that it infects a haloalkaliphilic host. Somewhat surprisingly, it was found to be closely related to ΦH, a temperate virus that infects Hbt. salinarum. The authors also consider a model for the packaging of ΦCh1 DNA into the virion and identify some of the virus structural proteins.

Antisense RNA mediates transcriptional processing in an archaebacterium, indicating a novel kind of RNase activity
-
The authors describe the first case of antisense control of gene expression in Archaea. An antisense RNA is produced during lysogenic infection of Hbt. salinarum by head-tail halovirus ΦH. This transcript is complementary to a lytic transcript and the RNA duplex is subsequently degraded, producing a truncated lytic transcript that cannot be translated.

Haloviruses HF1 and HF2: evidence for a recent and large recombination event
-
The genome sequence of broad host range head-tail halovirus HF1 is presented and compared with the sequence of Halorubrum coriense head-tail halovirus HF2. The first 48 kb of the virus genomes are identical (except for one, silent, base change); however, the final regions of the genomes, which appear to contain the virus receptor genes, show approximately 87% sequence identity. This and other evidence support the idea that a high rate of recombination occurs between haloviruses in natural hypersaline environments.
