A review, explaining the computational method in great detail has been published in W. A. Hofer, Prog. Surf. Sci. 171, 147 (2003). For computational reasons, the calculations were limited to only one K point in the Brillouin zone for both the surface and the tip, the plane wave energy cut-off was lowered to 300 eV, and only the two uppermost metal layer of the 5×5 optimized supercell were considered.
