Laufs H, Hamandi K, Salek-Haddadi A, et al. Temporal lobe interictal epileptic discharges affect cerebral activity in 'default mode' brain regions. Hum Brain Mapp 2006; 28 November [Epub ahead of print]. This study identifies a set of brain regions typically involved in temporal lobe epilepsy with frequent IEA: hippocampal activation confirming the importance of the hippocampus in this epilepsy syndrome; deactivation in default mode areas - also found to deactivate in absence epilepsy with generalized spike and wave discharges. The correlation with interictal activity may potentially explain transient cognitive impairment.
