It has been reported that in some residencies indigo production was so burdensome to the local population that the Inspector of the Cultivation System Louis Vitalis suggested to the Governor-General that a halt be called to growing indigo in some parts of Java. Vitalis's 'Kultuurverslag, Cultivation Report can be found in NA, Collectie Baud, inv. no. 461. Indeed, after 1847 the production of indigo under the Cultivation System was gradually phased out.
