    • The stable adducts are formed by covalent bonding of the PAH quinones to the exocylic amino groups of the purine bases in DNA. The depurinated adducts arise from reaction of PAH quinones on the nitrogen atoms of the imidazole rings of dG and dA in DNA resulting in loss of the purines from DNA. Defective repair of the gap may result in mutations.

    • Dibenzo[def,p]chrysene is frequently referred to as dibenzo[a,l]-pyrene. However, the latter name is obsolete and does not conform to the current IUPAC rules of nomenclature employed by Chemical Abstracts. Its continued use only perpetuates confusion. A condensed version of the rules of PAH nomenclature may be found in the following book: Harvey, R. G. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons; Wiley-VCH: New York, 1997.
