By using a disease-specific and study-specific QoL instrument, and with a high response rate (86%), the authors have been able to show that food allergy has a significant impact on a variety of aspects of family life. Food allergy has an impact not only on meal preparation and social activities, but also on school attendance, and there is a significant impact on parents' stress levels. Multiple regression analyses are performed to control the eventual impact of atopic comorbidity and multiple food allergies.

Int J Behav Med 2006; 13:121-130. This study describes eight different aspects of disease burden of individuals with gastrointestinal symptoms. The associations between the burden of disease and school and leisure activities, measured by five aspects, were investigated.

Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2006; 18:203-209. This study looks into food-allergic individuals' participation in the labour market, showing a low percentage of food allergic young adults with a full-time job. Comparisons are made with healthy controls and patients with other digestive disorders.

This paper describes the development of a brief condition-specific measure to evaluate parental adjustment to and coping with children's food allergy, including a factor analysis. The results show that four factors accounted for 53.6% of the variance: parental anxiety/distress, psychosocial impact of allergies, parental coping/competence, and family support.

28. Mandell D, Curtis R, Gold M, Hardie S. Anaphylaxis: how do you live with it? Health Social Work 2005; 30:325-335. This is the only qualitative study focusing on well-being in families with a food-allergic child, based on analyses of semistructured interviews. The paper gives valuable insights in the experiences of having a child with an anaphylaxis diagnosis. The authors analyse and report on informational and support needs of the families and also describe patterns of coping.
29. Marklund B, Ahlstedt S, Nordström G. Health-related quality of life in food hypersensitive schoolchildren and their families: parents' perceptions. Health Qual Life Outcomes 2006; 4:48. This study shows that a negative impact on both the physical and the psychosocial dimensions of QoL in food hypersensitivity is measurable also when using a generic QoL instrument. Using stepwise multiple regression analyses, this study identifies some factors that predict impact on QoL in food-hypersensitive children and their families. Additional allergic disease is an important predictor of low QoL in food hypersensitivity. Interestingly, food-induced breathing difficulties predicted higher QoL while food-induced gastrointestinal symptoms predicted lower QoL.
