    • The coordinate system used in this manuscript is such that Q z is normal to the liquid surface, Qx is parallel to the horizontal (untilted) incident X-ray beam, and Qy is orthogonal to both Qx and Qz. The hydrocarbon chains form two-dimensional polycrystals, giving rise to a diffraction pattern that depends on the modulus of the of the in-plane momentum transfer Qxy, Qx2, Q y2)1/2 and is practically independent of the sample rotation over the z-axis. We define Q, Q xy2, Qz2)1/2 as the total momentum transfer
