    • Categorization of humans in biomedical research: Genes, race, and disease
    • July
    • This definition comes from Neil Risch, Esteban Burchard, Elad Ziv and Hua Tang, 'Categorization of humans in biomedical research: genes, race, and disease', Genome Biology, vol. 3, no. 7, July 2002, 1-12. By 'primary' the authors presumably do not mean Africa, although they embrace the 'out of Africa' hypothesis. 'Primary' appears to mean continent reached as a result of 'one or more migration events out of Africa within the last 100,000 years' (3).

    • For high-risk women (women with two or more first-degree relatives with breast cancer), the prevalence of BRCA mutations is about 8.7 per cent and above. In the general population, BRCA mutations are thought to be present anywhere from 1 in 300 to 1 in 500 women. See Heidi D. Nelson, Laurie Hoyt Huffman, Rongwei Fu and Emily L. Harris, 'Genetic risk assessment and BRCA mutation testing for breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility: systematic evidence review for the US Preventive Services Task Force', Annals of Internal Medicine, vol. 143, no. 5, September 2005, 362-79.

    • The chemicals in question are ubiquitous in the environment and, in the bodies of wildlife and humans, do not break down easily and tend to 'bioaccumulate', that is, the amount of synthetic chemical body burden is much higher at the top of the food chain than at the bottom. This explains why concentrations are high in fish and particularly high in humans who depend on fish for food. Synthetic chemicals that are classified as 'persistent' (and thus likely to bioaccumulate) have been termed 'POPs', or 'persistent organic pollutants'. The UN has listed twelve POPs of greatest concern to scientists and environmental health activists. See Michelle Allsopp, Ruth Stringer and Paul Johnston, Unseen Poisons: Levels of Organochlorine Chemicals inHuman Tissues, Greenpeace Research Laboratories Technical Report (Amsterdam: Greenpeace International 1998), available online at http://archive.greenpeace.org/toxics/ reports/unseenpo.pdf (viewed 1 September 2006).

    • And, as notes in her recent book (Cambridge, MA: Perseus Publishing)
    • And, as Sandra Steingraber notes in her recent book, Having Faith: An Ecologist's Journey to Motherhood (Cambridge, MA: Perseus Publishing 2001), although breast-fed infants are not included in the typical 'chart' of the food chain, it is important to note that they occupy its highest slot since human milk is a repository for human food intake. Many synthetic chemicals bioaccumulate in human breast milk making it one of the most contaminated foods on the planet.

    • Racial stratification of organochlorine insecticide residue in human adipose tissue
    • 19 September
    • The racial stratification of chemical exposures is well documented. In one 1977 study, levels of DDT were twice that of white subjects and researchers were twice as likely to find traces of lindane in black tissue samples. F. W. Kutz, A. R. Yobs and S. C.
